An airsoft half teeth piston is usually used for helical gear sets. Helical gear sets are for high torque setups because they stronger than flat airsoft gears. The reason they are stronger is because the teeth are cut at an angle so that there is more than one gear tooth in contact with the piston at any given time. Not all helical gears use half teeth pistons. Similarly not all flat teeth gear sets use full teeth pistons. A nylon airsoft piston is generally softer than a polycarbonate airsoft piston, but that allows for the nylon piston to be more elastic and less likely to fracture.

If you want to upgrade your gearbox or your old piston breaks, you should consider a either a nylon or polycarbonate piston. Polycarbonate and nylon upgrade pistons are more reliable than a stock piston, and they are less likely to break.
